Bluu Biosciences

As the first company in Europe to specialize in the development and commercial production of cell-based fish, Bluu Biosciences is stepping up to produce high-quality, sustainable fish products from cell cultures.

Bluu Biosciences' cell-based fish will be free of microplastics, heavy metals and antibiotics. It will not compromise animal welfare, it is GMO-free and sustainable. First products will be simply structured like fishballs or fishsticks, followed by complex 3D-structures, e.g., in the form of fish fillets that do not differ from conventional fish in terms of structure, taste and cooking behaviour. The development focus is on the most popular and genetically best-defined edible fish species: atlantic salmon, rainbow trout and carp.

In addition to the co-founders and joint CEOs, the team consists of experts in the fields of marine biology, cell biology, cell and tissue engineering as well as food technology. Sebastian Rakers can draw on more than twelve years of experience in the development of cell cultures from various fish species and has served as deputy department head of the Marine Biotechnology Division at the Fraunhofer Development Centre for Marine and Cellular Biotechnology (EMB) in Lübeck before founding Bluu Biosciences.
